Stealth is a genre of computer games in which a player often needs to avoid detection by enemies or secretly eliminate them without attracting attention. To do this, the game character needs to hide, use disguises, and move around while remaining silent. The player often has a choice, to sneak past the guard or to sneak behind to subdue them. Attacking enemies head-on should be avoided in stealth games. If the guard happens to see you, they may become alert and hunt for the intruder. Usually, stealth games use the third-person view because the wide view is more suitable for stealth game mechanics. Since this genre is quite popular, sometimes stealth games are combined with the gameplay of other genres, for example, first-person shooters, platformers, and of course ninja games.
The genre started to gain incredible popularity in 1998 when the game series Metal Gear and Thief achieved great success. A few years later, these games were followed by two others which are still considered as iconic to this genre. First was titled Hitman and the second was Splinter Cell. It is also worth mentioning that the combination of stealth and survival horror genres is one of the most atmospheric, especially thanks to PC games like Amnesia (2010) and Outlast (2013).
